Color: prints or solid color fabrics?

Color: Do you prefer prints or solid color fabrics? I think you can trust your taste, but if you're unsure, one solution is to stick with solid color fabrics and/or blenders where the color appears less uniform because the fabric has a "textured" look.

At Fil Volant, we offer three solid color fabric ranges: Pure Solids for fans of Art Gallery Fabrics, Cotton Couture by the New York-based company Michael Miller Fabrics, and finally, Sevilla Shots by Stof Fabrics. This fabric is woven end-by-end, which makes it appear to change color slightly depending on the light, thus adding depth. What's more, the Sevilla Shots collection is made in Europe, in Portugal!

As for blenders, the Fresco collection by Michael Miller Fabrics is our most versatile. There's no pattern per se, but the color isn't uniform, and the overall result gives the fabric a papery appearance. We offer the collection in 22 colors.

Another option for blenders is the "Wiltshire Shadow" collection by Liberty of London Fabrics (from their quilting cotton fabric range called "Lasenby" cotton). This collection features small motifs, but it's printed tone-on-tone, so the overall color stands out, not the individual motifs. With the Wiltshire Shadow collection, you get all the delicacy and elegance of a Liberty fabric, but made from a quilting cotton fabric with very subtle, easy-to-use prints. We offer it in 23 colors.

Finally, the Hash Dots collection by Michael Miller Fabrics is also tone-on-tone, but with circles. Like Fresco, this collection is made from 100% quilting patchwork. The ten colors offered are bold, with a vibrant red and blue.

If you still want to incorporate prints but don't feel confident, why not choose small, widely spaced motifs where the cutting direction doesn't matter? This means you can use fabrics with small circles, stars, or other small shapes that will maintain their orientation even if the fabric is turned upside down.

The Spark collection with its little stars by Ruby Star Society was very popular. We have a second collection of small stars, this time in bolder colors and made by Cotton + Steel from a slightly thicker cotton fabric than that found in Spark by Ruby Star Society

We also carry part of the Beyond Bella collection by Moda Fabrics, a fabric collection with small cross-shaped motifs. We offer it in very soft tones, such as off-white and pale yellow, as well as brighter colors, like avocado green. These types of scatter-print motifs are quite versatile and are loved by veteran quilters and beginners alike
